What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychotherapist? In Ontario, a psychologist is able to diagnose as well as treat a client, but is unable to provide prescriptions for medications. A psychotherapist, depending on their educational background, is typically unable to diagnose or provide prescriptions for medications, but has specific training focused only on the treatment of symptoms/mental health conditions.
